PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone): antioxidant support for skin
PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) is a naturally occurring antioxidant compound. It is studied in longevity research for its link to cellular energy, and used in skincare to help protect skin from everyday environmental stress and help it look more energised.
What it is
PQQ is a small molecule found in trace amounts in foods such as kiwi fruit, parsley, green tea and fermented soybeans. It is a powerful antioxidant and can take part in many cycles of neutralising free radicals.
What the research looks at
Cell research has explored PQQ's relationship with mitochondria, the parts of a cell that produce its energy, which is why it is popular as a longevity supplement. In skincare, PQQ is valued for its antioxidant activity: helping defend skin against the oxidative stress caused by UV light, pollution and heat, which contributes to dullness and visible ageing.
Why it is in Vellura
PQQ is one of the four longevity actives of the VX-8™ platform, alongside nicotinamide riboside, ergothioneine and encapsulated resveratrol. Because PQQ is sensitive to light, Vellura formulas come in opaque airless bottles that protect it from light and air to the last dose.
Good to know
- Gives formulas a natural reddish tint, a visible sign the active is there.
- Pairs well with other antioxidants.
- Daily sunscreen remains essential: antioxidants complement it, they do not replace it.
Questions
Is PQQ a vitamin?
It is sometimes described as vitamin-like, but it is not officially classed as a vitamin.
Why does packaging matter for PQQ?
Light and air can degrade sensitive actives. Opaque airless packaging keeps them stable for longer.
