Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1: what it is and what it does for skin

Palmitoyl tripeptide-1 is a small signal peptide (three amino acids, glycine, histidine and lysine, joined to a fatty acid) used in skincare to help skin look firmer, smoother and more resilient.

What it is

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up the skin's own support proteins. Palmitoyl tripeptide-1 is built on the GHK sequence, a fragment that occurs naturally in the body. The palmitoyl part is a fatty acid that makes the molecule more compatible with the skin's lipid layers, so it stays where it is needed.

What the research looks at

Signal peptides are studied as messengers: small fragments that resemble the pieces the skin produces when its support structure is renewed. Laboratory studies have looked at palmitoyl tripeptide-1 for its role in the signalling linked to collagen and the surrounding matrix. In cosmetic use, it is chosen to improve the look of firmness and fine lines with consistent use over several weeks.

It is most often paired with palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. The two together are one of the most widely used peptide combinations in skincare.

Why it is in Vellura

Palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 form the recurring core of the VX-8™ peptide network and appear across several formulas in the system. Each peptide is dosed in the ranges its suppliers recommend and published studies use, not at trace levels for the label.

Good to know

  • Gentle and generally well tolerated, including by sensitive skin.
  • Works gradually: expect visible change over weeks of morning and evening use, not overnight.
  • Layers well with other peptides, ceramides and hydrators.

Questions

Is palmitoyl tripeptide-1 the same as Matrixyl?

It is one of the two peptides in the combination often sold as Matrixyl 3000. The other is palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7.

Can I use it with retinoids or vitamin C?

Yes. Peptides are commonly layered with other actives. Introduce new products one at a time and follow each product's directions.
