How to Choose a Peptide Serum: What to Look For Before You Spend

By Karolina Maria Szymczyk, founder of The House of Vellura · October 2026

When you compare premium anti-ageing serums, first check what kind they are. Growth-factor serums, such as SkinMedica TNS, are built around signalling proteins. Multi-peptide serums, such as Medik8 Liquid Peptides, combine several short peptides for different visible concerns. Then judge any serum on the same five things: named actives, variety of jobs, honest percentages, a supportive base and protective packaging.

"Is X a comparable alternative to Y?" is one of the most common questions about luxury serums. The answer depends less on the brand than on what is in the bottle.

Peptide serums vs growth-factor serums

Peptide serums Growth-factor serums
Key actives Short, defined amino-acid chains Larger signalling proteins, often from cell cultures
Ingredient list Specific INCI names you can look up Often listed as culture media or conditioned media
Feel and stability Generally stable and easy to layer Can be more delicate; some have a distinct scent
Typical goal Firmer, smoother-looking skin, softer expression lines Overall skin quality and texture

Neither is "better" in general. Some people like using one of each.

The five-point checklist

  1. Named actives. Can you see exactly which peptides are inside? Look for INCI names such as palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tripeptide-5 or acetyl hexapeptide-8.
  2. Different jobs. Firming, calming and expression-line peptides do different things. Five peptides doing one job are less useful than three doing different ones. See Peptides explained.
  3. Honest percentages. "20% peptides" often means 20% of a dilute solution. Ask what a number measures. See Our Standards.
  4. A supportive base. Peptides work best on hydrated skin with a healthy barrier: look for humectants, niacinamide or ceramides.
  5. Packaging. Opaque, airless or pump bottles protect sensitive formulas better than droppers left open to air.

How to compare two serums

  • Put the ingredient lists side by side and highlight the actives.
  • Check where they sit: actives near the end are usually at low levels.
  • Divide the price by the millilitres and by how many weeks it lasts.
  • Patch-test, then use one serum consistently for at least eight weeks before judging.

Our serum

The Renewal Serum combines palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and tetrapeptide-7 with acetyl hexapeptide-8, plus niacinamide, adenosine, a stable vitamin C derivative, ergothioneine and ceramides, in an airless bottle.

Questions

Can I use a peptide serum and a growth-factor serum together?

Yes, many people layer them, usually the thinner texture first.

How long before a peptide serum works?

Hydration shows quickly; firmness and lines take several weeks of daily use.

Is a more expensive serum more effective?

Not automatically. Judge the formula, not the price. See Is luxury skincare worth it?
